September 10th

The Wonderville Connection
September 10, 2012
Dear Parents,

The Student Council election was wonderful!  I am so proud of all the students in my class who ran.  They were amazing!  We will have an in-class election for the representatives this week.  Our first Student Council meeting will be Thursday during lunch.

I am beginning parent teacher conferences this week.  Please refer to the blog for my conference schedule.  Please note the early release days next week for conferences.

Here is a quick academic update:

  • Math – we finished the unit on multiplication and division.  Hallelujah!  Don’t be alarmed if these skills are still challenging for your student.  We will return to both later in the year.

  • Writing – the Pencil Adventure stories are complete!  I haven’t read all of them yet, but those that I have are excellent!  We have super hero pencils, pencils falling in love and pencils dealing with Mrs. Isaacson’s dangerous high heels!  Adorable!  We will write a caricature description this week.  Again, the assignment must be typed and it will be due on Friday.

  • Science – we finished the investigations on joints and wrote a class book on Friday about poor Jeremy who broke both humorous and ulna bones as well as several metacarpals and phalanges on both hands.  Our book just discusses a day in his life.  It is rather difficult to have casts from shoulder to fingertip!  This week our investigations focus on muscles!

We decided that the class can do better on learning the names of the bones, so we scheduled another bone name test for Thursday.  We also scheduled a test on the names of 16 muscles for Friday.  Ask your student where his/her deltoids are!

  • In Language Arts we will prepare for and take the post test for our first theme.  The focus for this theme is literary elements, prefixes, suffixes, roots, types of sentences and simple/complete subjects and predicates.  You may want to help your child review!

  • The book clubs are going well.  One group is already finished with their book and planning their report!

A few students are still struggling to turn in their homework.  Please keep working with your student on homework consistency!

I look forward to meeting all of you at the parent teacher conferences!

Have a great week!

Mrs. Isaacson

September 3rd

The Wonderville Connection
September 3, 2012
Dear Parents,

I hope you had a restful holiday weekend!  I know that Labor Day signifies the end of summer, and frankly aren’t you glad?!?!  I was just outside and it felt SO GOOD!  I had a great weekend!  I did a little shopping, played with the puppies, cleaned house and spent time with some of my kids, my wonderful husband and the grandsons!  Perfect!

We have a fun-filled week in front of us at Gale Elementary!  The Student Council election starts tomorrow!  We had so many kids running for President in our class that we had a Primary Election last week.  Congratulations to those who advanced.  For those who did not receive a nomination, the class representative position will be something to consider pursuing.  Good luck candidates!  Here is a reminder of the election process:

  • Posters, buttons, book marks or flyers may be distributed and/or posted starting tomorrow, Tuesday, September 4th.  All signage must be removed from the school by Friday, September 7th.
  • Students running for office should write a 90 second speech outlining their qualifications and intentions if elected.  Practice!  Practice!  Practice!
  • Speeches will be given at an assembly on Thursday, September 6th at 8:15 in the morning.  Candidates, don’t forget to DRESS FOR SUCCESS!  Parents, feel free to attend!
  • The entire student body will vote in their classes after the assembly.

A few students are struggling to turn in their homework.  Therefore, Mrs. Erickson and I have devised a program to encourage personal responsibility.  Any student who does not turn in homework on time will have detention on Friday during our free play time.  Please encourage your child to develop good homework habits!

Band will begin this week!  I am very excited that almost every student in our class has chosen to participate in band, guitar or orchestra.  For many students, elementary music helps them recognize a personal interest they may not have identified otherwise!

Parent Teacher conferences are coming up!  Check the schedule!  If you need to sign up for a conference, you can do so on your parent letter or email me.  I will send reminders home the day before your conference.  I look forward to meeting with you!

I am amazed that we have been in school for a month already!  The weeks have flown by!  Ms. Sylvian loves our class and is slowly taking over instruction.  She will take complete control of the class for several weeks during October.  We are lucky to have her!  She is also lucky to get to work with such outstanding students.  I often comment about what a privilege it is to spend my days with children.  Thank you for sharing yours with me!

Have a great week!  Susan Isaacson
