August 27, 2012

Dear Parents,

Thank you so much for coming to Open House last week!  Students love to share their “work place” with their families!

I also appreciate your signing up for Parent Teacher conferences.  I will post the schedule on the blog in the next few days.  I will also send the schedule home on paper so you can sign up if you have not been able to do so.

The Student Council election starts this week!  Fifth graders can run for President or Secretary.  If your child wants to run for office, they should have brought home some information, but just in case, here are the main points:

  • Posters, buttons, book marks or flyers may be distributed and/or posted starting Tuesday, September 4th.  All signage must be removed from the school by Friday, September 7th.
  • Students running for office should write a 90 second speech outlining their qualifications and intentions if elected.
  • Speeches will be given at an assembly on Thursday, September 6th at 8:15 in the morning.
  • The entire student body will have an opportunity to vote in their classes after the assembly.
Lots of students are planning to run for office in our class.  Therefore, we will have a Primary Election this week.  The top four candidates for each office will continue to the General Election.  Please encourage your student to practice their speech at home.  Our Primary Election will be held on Thursday, August 30th.

We were able to start our book clubs last week!  The students were placed into groups based on book interest.  They met in their groups on Friday and made a calendar of their reading assignments.  They are expected to keep up with the reading and encouraged not to read ahead.  Some students will complete the reading at school, but most will need to read at home as part of their homework.  The book clubs will meet on Thursdays to discuss their reading.  Some vocabulary assignments will be given with the reading and a book report will be required at the conclusion of the project.  The first book club due date is October 12th.

I have been pleased with how responsible students are with their homework.  However, some students are becoming more lax.  We do not have planners this year, so I will print a weekly calendar for them to record assignments.  This calendar will be kept in their orange Gale homework folder.  Please help your child develop the good habit of doing their homework in the same place and at the same time every day.  Further, I keep instructing them that homework is not done until it has been placed in their backpack and ready to return to school!  Students with missing homework assignments miss out on Free Play Friday (a very important part of our week)!

We had an assembly with Mrs. Mueller, the band teacher, last week.  Students who have interest in taking band brought a permission slip home on Friday.  If you need another copy, please let me know.  We are so lucky to have band and orchestra back at Gale!

I hope you like the pictures my daughter added!  We do have an update in the dog department . . . PUPPIES!  They arrived last Sunday starting at 9:30 p.m.  The 9th puppy was born at around 2:30 a.m.!  The amazing thing to me is 1 female, 8 males!

I hope you keep checking the blog!  I will post all project homework.  The book club project is the first!

Have a fantastic week!

Introduction

Welcome to our class blog!

Let me introduce myself. I am Susan Isaacson.  This is my tenth year teaching elementary school, and I love teaching! I do not love chickens.  My family is amazing!  My husband and I have been married for 29 years; we have four children, one daughter-in-law, two sons-in-law and two adorable grandsons. We have two chocolate labs with puppies on the way! I love to exercise, "So You Think You Can Dance?" art, and food (though I don't like to cook much anymore)!

I will send a newsletter home each week, but I will also post it on this blog.  Students will have daily homework assignments, but long-term projects will be posted on the blog. Since we do not have planners at this point, I will be giving each student a weekly homework calendar where they will record daily homework assignments.  Look for this homework calendar in your student's Gale homework folder.

Please mark your calendars for our 5th Grade Open House!  It is scheduled for Monday, August 20th, from 6:30 until 7:30 in the evening.  We hope you will bring the whole family!
